Who is the book written for?

Anyone working in education and schools will find the book helpful. It is a perfect resource for teachers, teaching assistants and senior leaders. Parents can also use the book to broaden their understanding. If you’re a parent of a child who needs support with their senses, it could be a great book for you to gift to your child’s school. Therapists will find the book a helpful resource to loan to schools.

Success with Sensory Supports is designed to help you understand the world of sensory supports. The book is written to help you to understand sensory needs and behaviours. It will help you to identify sensory needs and use sensory tools more effectively. My goal is to add sensory awareness to your toolbox.

What’s in the book? – Success with Sensory Supports outline

Success with Sensory Supports is divided into six sections. It is recommended that you read the book in section order. This is because each section builds on the next.  The earlier sections will give you the understanding you need to use the strategies in Section Five effectively to meet the needs of the children you are supporting.

  • 1

Section One introduces the eight senses.  Knowledge of the eight senses will help you understand which sense specific strategies are targeting.

  • 2

Chapter Two explores regulation.  Regulation is a key goal of using sensory supports.  It is essential that you understand regulation so that you can choose supports correctly.

  • 3

Part Three explains how to evaluate sensory needs and set goals.  It outlines how you can identify sensory triggers for behaviours and how to understand an individual child’s sensory profile.

  • 4

Section Four describes how you can use the information gathered in your evaluation to make a sensory plan.

  • 5

Chapter Five contains the sensory strategies.  It outlines sensory equipment and specific activities for the classroom.  I also explore how you can utilise these in sensory circuits and sensory diets.

  • 6

Part Six considers how you can teach children to use their sensory strategies independently to support self-regulation.
